EARTHQUAKE MAGNITUDE & INTENSITY
1. Magnitude: A measure of the amplitude of the seismic waves and of the amount of energy / Richter Scale / Numbers
2. Intensity: A subjective measure that describes how strong a shock was felt at a particular location / MMI Scale / Roman letters
3. Equations between Magnitude & Intensity
1) Eastern US: Mag = 1/2 MMI +1.75 (Nuuttli & Hermann, 1978)
2) Western US: Mag = 2/3 MMI +1.00 (Gutenberg & Richter, 1956)
